The site of this development is a relatively large parcel of land in the attractive coastal village of Milford-on-Sea. It extends southwards off Keyhaven Road, with the northern half of the site, set within the sensitive Milford-on-Sea Conservation Area which comprises mainly historic houses from the mid to late 19th Century. At the time of our introduction, the site had a history of unsuccessful planning submissions.

Our scheme proposes 8 new dwelling houses in a combination of detached and semi-detached configurations. Part of the success of the design was the positive response of the layout to the tight urban grain of the village. The arrangement of dwellings creates a linear lane with buildings defining the street. Such lanes, running south from Keyhaven Road and the High Street, are a typical contextual feature and make an important contribution to local distinctiveness. The southern part of the site is conceived to create a more open, low key character, presenting a green and spacious configuration with the dwellings respecting the strong visual connection with Danestream Valley.

The Council felt the development would be well designed and in keeping with the character of the town. Although, it was recognised that the loss of an existing employment site is contrary to policy, the Council considered the benefits of a scheme that is sympathetic to the character and appearance of the Milford-on-Sea conservation area.

The planning committee members unanimously accepted the case officer’s recommendation to grant planning permission.
